MOTT MACDONALD

Building high performance teams at scale and pace

Mott MacDonald, a leading management, engineering, and development consultancy operating extensively in the economic and social infrastructure sector, employs around 18,000 individuals globally. Within this expansive organisation, the Strategic Advisory team, a new addition comprising about 140 to 150 members and operational for just over a year, sought innovative ways to enhance team cohesion and develop team performance at pace and scale.

THE CHALLENGE

The core challenge faced by the newly formed Strategic Advisory team was fostering quick and effective connections among a diverse and globally-distributed team. Their project portfolio required multidisciplinary teams, who were often unfamiliar with one another, to come together at pace and collaborate effectively to deliver world-class services for their clients.

THE SOLUTION

With the support of Mindflick-trained in-house champions, we introduced the Mindflick app across the Strategic Advisory team to facilitate rapid rapport and deep interpersonal connection across the team.

Our app, a digital tool designed to deepen interpersonal relationships through cutting edge behavioural science, offered team members insights into each other's work styles and communication preferences. The app's accessibility on mobile devices allowed for on-the-go engagement, enabling team members to tailor their interactions in 1-2-1 and team meetings to get the best out of their colleagues and facilitate team performance.

THE IMPACT

Fifteen months into our journey with the Strategic Advisory team, the introduction of Mindflick tools and thinking has facilitated the knitting together of four discrete teams from across the business and enabled the rapid formation of cohesive project teams capable of responding to client needs.

The digital tool's flexibility and ease of use have enhanced the pace at which team members forge effective working relationships, particularly when embarking on assignments with previously unknown colleagues, subsequently leading to higher levels of team performance across the Strategic Advisory portfolio.

“FOR ME, A LOT OF THIS IS ABOUT THE PACE WITHIN WHICH WE CAN GET PEOPLE TO CONNECT TOGETHER, ON A ONE TO ONE BASIS BUT THEN FORM TEAMS THAT REALLY UNDERSTAND THE DYNAMIC OF WHAT'S LIKELY TO HAPPEN AND HOW THEY CAN OPERATE TOGETHER.”

Andy Moulds - Head of Strategic Advisory
